How do you do it? I tried cycling through 4 inches of powder once... in a deserted parking lot. Every surface was white & light gray; I had no depth perception. I could hardly tell a curb from the pavement.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to psyche myself up to commuting -- through dark & rainy nights -- home from work this winter. Rain, I can cope with. Snow and Ice? Yikes!
Skills I have picked up through mountain biking have really helped me be prepared for the unexpected but it's also key to plan your routes so you generally know what's expected, e.g. you won't have unexpected curbs jumping out at you on your regular commute, you pretty much know where they are. Studded tires are, in my opinion, essential and I have different studded tires for different conditions. The one's in this picture are for extreme conditions where you won't encounter any pavement. I covered my commuting tires in this post .
ReplyDeleteAs for your one experience in 4 inches of powder, I'd offer the perspective that the first time one does something that has a skill requirement, one generally sucks at it; only by gaining the skill required will it become easier. In other words, the more you do it, the more fun it is!
Hmmm, the link to the commuting tires post didn't work (it's what I suck at :-) so here it is for your pasting pleasure:

very well said!!!!
Peace...................
You like the snow huh? I'm a winter person also, but I'm not a fan of biking on snow. Once the path or roads are clear enough, I'm the first one out riding usually.
ReplyDeleteI've done it, but don't really miss it! But I'm not afraid of it, either. I'd only miss a day if it were already 4" or deeper *before* I set out!
ReplyDeleteOkay. The next time it snows 4 inches, I am going to be out there on my bike. (Since I live in Portland, this isn't going to be a weekly event. But I will try again!)
